Ukraine Overview: NATO and EU Want To Cooperate More Closely, Debate About Tank Deliveries

The EU and the NATO countries want to take more coordinated action against common threats. Great Britain and Poland are considering supplying more tanks to Ukraine.

NATO and the EU want to work together more closely on defense issues in the future. A joint declaration is to be signed on this Tuesday. Against the background of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and China's power politics, both institutions want to take even more coordinated action against common security threats.

According to the dpa news agency, which has the paper, the statement is specifically about better cooperation in the protection of critical infrastructure, dealing with foreign information manipulation and interference, and security policy issues related to climate change. In addition, the EU and NATO are again calling on Russia to end the war.

Debate about further tank deliveries

Western states are also discussing supplying main battle tanks to Ukraine. Poland is considering giving the country "a few or a dozen" Leopard tanks. The National Security Council is also discussing this issue with President Andrzej Duda. But the NATO country will not do anything alone, said Duda's security adviser Paweł Jablonski. However, Poland could be part of a broad coalition of countries supplying modern battle tanks to Ukraine.

This could also include Great Britain. According to a report by Sky News, the country is considering the delivery of up to ten Challenger 2 main battle tanks. As Der Spiegel reports, Great Britain has already "non-bindingly announced" a possible Challenger 2 delivery among western Ukraine supporters.

More weapons required

Meanwhile, Ukraine is demanding more weapons. "No one has done enough as long as Russian boots are on Ukrainian soil," Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter. Arming the Ukrainian army is the shortest way to restore peace and security in Europe.
