Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Russia Wants To Secede From The Kherson Region

The rulers installed by Russia want to detach the Cherson region from Ukraine. Already on Sunday they want to introduce the ruble as a means of payment.

The rulers installed by Russia in the southern Ukrainian region of Cherson want to permanently separate the region from the Ukrainian state. Russia claims that the Ukrainian leadership is dominated by "Nazis". There is no evidence for that.

Kirill Stremusov from the pro-Moscow administration said there would be no referendum on the status of the southern Ukrainian region. The government in Kiev had warned that Russia was planning a referendum on independence in the Kherson region along the lines of the eastern Ukrainian separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Russia has occupied the area almost completely for weeks. In the city of the same name, Cherson, there are repeated protests against the occupying forces.

Russia widens attacks, according to Ukraine

According to the General Staff in Kyiv, the invaders have significantly expanded their attacks. They would attack intensively from practically all sides and shell targets, the staff said. Russia is concentrating additional forces near Izyum in the Kharkiv region - apparently with the aim of encircling the defenders of Ukraine in the east, it said.

Destroyed Western Weapons

Above all, Russia is still striving for full control over the Luhansk and Donetsk regions in order to establish a land corridor to the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea. According to the General Staff in Kyiv, the Russian armed forces continue to use the Melitopol airport in the Zaporizhia region as a base for their combat aircraft and helicopters. The information cannot be independently verified.

The governor of Luhansk reported to Telegram about heavy destruction in the embattled cities of Lysychansk and Popasna. Four people were killed and four others injured in Russian attacks in the Luhansk region within a day, wrote Serhiy Hajdaj. The Russian army shelled civilian targets dozens of times with airstrikes and artillery.

Attacks on Azov Steel

Meanwhile, there are more reports of attacks on Ukraine's Azov steel plant in Mariupol . Azov deputy commander Svyatoslav Palamar said Russia dropped "a colossal amount of phosphorus bombs." These incendiary bombs ignite on contact with oxygen and wreak havoc; their use is prohibited. Images from the US company Planet Labs are also said to show that a central building in the complex was severely damaged by intense shelling.

US Stop Arming Ukraine

The Azov regiment appealed to the Ukrainian government in a video message : "I call on the military-political leadership to take decisive steps to break the blockade, or to evacuate everyone who hopes and believes in their fatherland," Palamar . Fighters are increasingly wondering why Kyiv is not keeping promises, Palamar said. "Who can answer this: Why are we alone against artillery, ships and planes?"

A week ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the port city conquered. He called on his soldiers not to storm the steelworks and instead tighten the siege ring. The attacks continued thereafter. In addition to 2,000 Ukrainian fighters, around 1,000 civilians are also holding out in the underground passages under the plant.

Dead in Kharkiv

According to Ukrainian sources, at least three people were killed and six injured, including a 14-year-old child, as a result of shelling in the Kharkiv region. The local administration blamed Russia for the civilian casualties. Regional military chief Oleg Synegubow said two of the six wounded were seriously injured. The Russian military used artillery and mortars. The Ukrainian army is holding the position and inflicting casualties on the "enemy". Several Russians were captured. The information could not initially be independently verified.

In the Sumy region, the local administration reported more than 50 bullet holes from mortars. A spokesman for the authorities said nothing was known about the victims. Attacks were also reported from Mykolayiv. The air defenses shot down a Russian spy drone over the Black Sea near Odessa, the Ukrainian army said. Again, this information cannot be independently verified.
