Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Situation In Ukraine—Attack Warning, New Rocket Launchers For Ukraine

According to the Ukrainian president, Russia is using Ukraine as a test for attacks against other European countries. The US supplies new weapons.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of using  Ukraine as a testing ground for possible attacks against other European countries. "Russia is testing everything in Ukraine that can be used against other European countries," said Zelenskyy in his video address. "It started with gas wars and ended with a full-scale invasion, rocket terror and the burning of Ukrainian cities."

Ukraine must also defeat Russia so that other countries are safe, Zelenskyj said. "The quicker this happens, the less harm and suffering all European families, all European countries will experience."

The Ukrainian head of state also urged the preservation of anti-aircraft systems. There are already agreements with international partners, but "a completely different speed and a completely different level of protection" are required, said Zelenskyj.

The US, meanwhile, wants to deliver four additional Himar-type missile systems to Ukraine, bringing  the total to 16.  "The Ukrainians made good use of the Himars, you can see that on the battlefield," US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said. These can  hit targets 80 kilometers away. In addition to the rocket launchers, the US also wants to  supply additional ammunition.

The other events of the night at a glance:

Russia does not appear to be reducing its gas volumes for the time being.  According to preliminary figures from the operating company, gas deliveries via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline are about as large as before their maintenance. A little less than 30 million kilowatt hours per hour have been announced, which means around 700 gigawatt hours per day.

The Russian government has threatened to  stop offering oil on the world market if a  price limit is set for oil.

Since the beginning of the war, Russia has apparently violated international humanitarian law severely and on a massive scale. According to a report by the electoral and human rights office ODIHR, particularly serious cases include the shelling of the theater in Mariupol in mid-March and the Kramatorsk train station in early April.

According to US calculations, around 15,000 Russian soldiers have died in the war with Ukraine. In addition, there could be three times as many injuries, said CIA Director William Burns.

The Ukrainian army has again  attacked Russia's border region of Belgorod, according to Russian sources. The region's governor announced that the villages of Nekhoteyevka and Zhuravlevka had been shelled. As a result, several houses were damaged in Nekhoteyevka. There is one civilian fatality.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that cities in the Donbass will be rebuilt. There is a lot to do in Luhansk and Donetsk. "Therefore, our country will help the Luhansk People's Republic and the Donetsk People's Republic," he said.

This will be important today:

The EU's new Russia sanctions are set to come into force. The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States has already initiated the written decision-making process. It is considered a formality, since the initiation of the procedure is usually only approved if there are no objections.
