Karim Masimov, a close ally of the country's founding president Nursultan Nazarbayev, has been fired from his post as head of the KNB after protesters broke into government buildings in Almaty.
The former head of the Kazakhstan intelligence agency has been detained on suspicion of high treason, this body said on Saturday, after being dismissed amid recent violent protests.
The National Security Committee (KNB) has indicated in a statement that its former head Karim Masimov had been arrested on Thursday after an investigation for crimes of high treason began.

"On January 6 of this year, the National Security Committee began a preliminary investigation for high treason," the statement said.
"On the same day, on suspicion of committing this crime, the former director of the KNB KK Masimov was arrested and placed in a temporary detention center, along with others," he adds.
Masimov, a close ally of the country's founding president Nursultan Nazarbayev, was fired from his post as head of the KNB this week after protesters broke into government buildings in Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan.
