Afghanistan | Taliban Demand Resumption Of International Flights In Kabul

The Taliban have asked international airlines to resume their flights at Kabul Airport. After solving technical problems, this is "fully operational" again, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

All commercial flights into the country were suspended after the Taliban came to power. The airport was badly damaged during evacuation operations by western states at the end of August, in which more than 120,000 people were flown out.

Since then, only charter flights and a few special flights operated by Pakistani, Iranian and Afghan airlines have started and landed in Kabul . Pakistan International Airlines and Kam Air are currently charging more than $ 1,200 for a 40-minute flight from Kabul to Islamabad.

Despite the price, which is said to be so high due to war insurance, the flights are fully booked. Kabul Airport was rebuilt with technical assistance from Qatar , the United Arab Emirates and Turkey in particular . The international community hopes that the Taliban will keep their promise to allow anyone to leave the country if commercial flights are resumed.

Turkey is supposed to support the Taliban in operating the airport. Both parties negotiated this before they came to power. But the prerequisite for this is an inclusive government, said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan now to the US broadcaster CBS News. "The government in Afghanistan is not inclusive, it does not include all different interest groups. As long as that is the case, we will not be present in Afghanistan," said Erdoğan.

Taliban publicly display bodies

In the Afghan city of Herat, the Taliban have now put the bodies of four men on public display. They were charged with kidnapping a trader and his son. According to Lieutenant Governor Maulaui Shir Akhmed Amar, the men were killed in combat and their prisoners were freed.

The men "were hung up so that no one dared to commit such crimes", Amar told the dpa news agency. Recordings from Herat showed people filming a corpse with their cell phones, which is wrapped in chains and hung from a crane in the main town square.

During their rule in the late 1990s, the Taliban were known to punish crimes with public flogging, publicly stoning people, and amputating limbs. With the withdrawal of international troops, the Taliban took power again in Afghanistan in mid-August . Experts assume that the Taliban will govern this way again. According to local media, shaving beards has already been banned in the southern Helmand province.
