The emir of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, died today at the age of 73, without the circumstances of his death being known at the moment, the state news agency reported today.
"The Ministry of Presidential Affairs conveys its condolences to the people of the United Arab Emirates and the Arab Muslim nations (...) for the leader of the nation His Highness Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, President of the State, who went to God on Friday, May 13," the department said in a statement released by WAM.
The UAE's official news agency confirmed the death of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and said that 40 days of mourning had been declared for the president. According to media reports, the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan will be accompanied by 40 days of mourning and a three-day public holiday during which the national flag will remain unfurled.
