Israel And Iran || Israel Accuses Iran Of Fatal Attack On Oil Tankers

Israel accuses Iran after a fatal attack on a ship in the north of the Indian Ocean. Two crew members were killed in Thursday's attack, one from the UK and one from Romania. This was announced by the British company Zodiac Maritime, which operates the ship. The Zodiac Group is chaired by Israeli businessman Ejal Ofer. 

According to US explosives experts, it is suspected that the attack was carried out by drones. The New York Times first reported such suspicions.

The attack is part of a series of clashes at sea between Iran and Israel - but this is the first in which civilians have died.

"Iran is not just an Israeli problem, but an exporter of terror, destruction and instability that harm us all," wrote Foreign Minister Jair Lapid on Saturday night on Twitter. Lapid wrote that he had told Britain's Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab of the need to respond sharply to the attack. In addition, he had instructed the embassies in Washington, London and the United Nations to turn to the relevant contacts at the UN. There have been repeated attacks over the past few months.

Zodiac Maritime announced on Friday that there was a suspicion of an incident involving pirates on board the tanker M / T Mercer Street . The ship is Japanese owned and managed by the UK-based company. It was on the way from Tanzania to the Emirate of Fujairah and had no cargo on board.

Iran has neither expressly accepted nor denied responsibility. State television broadcaster Al-Alam described the attack on the ship as a reaction to the recent Israeli attack on a military airport in Syria, whose regime is supported by Iranian forces.

In the past few months, ships with connections to Israel have been repeatedly attacked in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Oman . At the beginning of July, a cargo ship was attacked that, according to media reports, was previously owned by Zodiac Maritime. According to the Israeli daily Haaretz , Israel suspected that Iran was behind the attack. Similar incidents occurred in February and April, and Israel accused Iran of these.

In April, an Iranian freighter was slightly damaged in an explosion in the Red Sea. According to reports in the New York Times, the attack originated in Israel.

Iran is enemies with Israel. Israel, on the other hand, has meanwhile established diplomatic relations with the two Gulf countries, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which in turn are regarded as rivals to Iran.
