Donald Trump || Alone With Friends

Donald Trump appears in the usual manner at a right wing Republican conference. Other celebrities stay away. Is the party moving away from the ex-president?

The program of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas has one highlight after the next in store for every Trumpist. Participants can range from "How to Gather Evidence of Election Fraud" to "Big Tech's Power Trip" to "Can We Cancel Cancel Culture?" Let them strengthen their worldview for a whole weekend. There is also discussion of who really runs the White House, because Joe Biden is certainly not from the point of view of those who regularly gather at the CPAC. And between the seminars, the darlings of the right perform. Donald Trump Jr., Florida Senator Rick Scott, talk radio host Glenn Beck. And of course her star: Donald Trump.

The ex-president has been on tour again for a few weeks, he spoke to supporters in Ohio and Florida, visited the wall on the border with Mexico and now the CPAC. It's a home game for Trump and of course he's a long time coming. While the audience looks at an orphaned high desk on Sunday afternoon, a Mickey Mouse-like clip of the CPAC is shown again on a screen. It makes fun of the Biden government and takes up all the issues that the Conservatives will see before the next election. Immigration, Economy, Urban Violence, Critical Race Theory , Cancel Culture . In short, the decline of a great nation in the hands of the radical left.

Three quarters of an hour late, Trump then enters the stage, which is a bit puny for his standards. The ex-president likes to have big US flags in the background. The usual clenched fist in front of the CPAC logo must do it. And the organizers don't have a good grip on the tone either, but missing a few half-sentences from Trump doesn't mean missing out on something new. He brings the speech that he always brings with him. About the fake news media and America that he'll make great again. And, of course, always the choice that is stolen. All these set pieces of a practiced script come up in the first few minutes.

In Dallas, however, it all looks a bit worn, the clenched fist is the most combative thing Trump shows. The medium-sized stage doesn't suit the 75-year-old. The ex-president doesn't need any new content at the moment. What the presidency brought him works with friends. There is still enough for the CPAC amount. It doesn't have to convince Trump, he just has to keep it if he wants to keep his political future open. According to a spontaneous survey, 70 percent of visitors would like Trump to be a presidential candidate again in 2024. "If it's bad for me, it's a fake poll," says Trump, who didn't know the result during his speech. "If it's good, it's the most accurate survey I know."

How much is Trumpism still pulling?

The conference, which takes place regularly, is not only a place for right-wing conservatives in the Republican Party to reach the grassroots and make sure of it, but also an opportunity to meet with donors. Even if the next presidential election in 2024 still seems a long way off: The USA is back in the election campaign. The mid-term elections next year in Congress could change the narrow majorities. And for the conservatives in particular, they are a test of how much voters still want Trumpism.

Quite a few MPs and senators rely on the content, Trump himself supports everyone who follows him unconditionally. Especially when it comes to the big lie, the lie of the stolen choice. Of the nearly 700 Republicans running for the Senate or House of Representatives, at least a third have adopted this lie as a narrative , according to the Washington Post . Electoral integrity has become the new campaign issue. Among the participants in the CPAC, the quota of those who see Trump as a legitimate president will be significantly higher. The world is different here.

It is noticeable that prominent Republicans who are hoping for a presidential candidacy and are completely in line with Trump's content are not in Dallas this weekend. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo - all of whom had appeared at the CPAC in Florida in February - apologized. Family reasons or tragedies in their own state were cited. In the coming months, they all have to try to sell the content coined by the ex-president with their own voice. While a possible renewed Trump candidacy continues to hover over the entire party. Similar to ex-Vice President Mike Pence, Pompeo is already touring in pre-election states such as Iowa and New Hampshire to test the mood among wealthy voters.

Where the donations go will depend a lot on Trump and his further ambitions. But the 74-year-old also needs money. Calls for support of the fight against the left with 20, 25 or 100 dollars are regularly sent by e-mail. Trump's lawsuit, which he filed against Facebook, Twitter and Google this week , falls into this category. It is not only well received - at the CPAC, Trump receives loud interim applause when he talks about it - it is also easy to market. Mails with the request to support this lawsuit financially are now being sent to all mailing lists again and again.

The lawsuit against Big Tech remains the only variation in Trump's speech that otherwise swings from immigration to Portland's Antifa , Hunter Biden, Hillary Clinton and the outrageous investigation against the Trump Organization back to the stolen election. With passages during the one-and-a-half-hour performance where Trump himself may not know exactly where he actually wants to go.

Trump's son Donald Jr. said before the father's speech it was going to be interesting and people would certainly be beside themselves. At the end of Trump's performance it is not very interesting and ecstasy does not come across via livestream. The ex-president stands alone on his stage and clenches his fist again. If he wants to maintain his influence on and over the party, that might no longer be enough against people like Ron DeSantis in the medium term.
