The European Union has also expressed regret over the incident. European Council President Charles Mitchell tweeted: "Watching tonight in Washington DC is nothing short of shocking."

"In the eyes of the world, American democracy is under siege tonight," said Joseph Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy chief.

 "Shameful scenes in the US Congress," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Twitter.

Details of the deaths during the Capitol Hill riots

Washington DC Mayor Bowser and Police Chief Robert Conte recently spoke at a press conference about the damage caused by the riots on Capitol Hill and the overall situation.

He said the woman who was shot dead by police was part of a group of people who tried to break into the building during the meeting.

The group was apprehended by plainclothes men and an officer had to use a weapon.

The woman was taken to hospital, where her death was confirmed. Their identities will not be revealed until their close relatives are notified.

Elaborating on other deaths, he said the other three killed included a middle-aged woman and two men. All three died of various medical emergencies.

About 14 people from the Metro Police Department were also injured during the incident, two of whom had to be hospitalized. One of them suffered serious injuries as he was dragged into the crowd.
