An extraordinary meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be held on July 10 at the request of the United States , to take stock of the exemptions to the 2015 nuclear agreement announced by Iran , said Friday a spokesman for the UN agency.
The IAEA Board of Governors, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, will meet "this Wednesday at 14:30," according to the spokesman.
Exceeding the authorized limit of uranium
The United States, which has withdrawn from the 2015 deal, called for the special session as Iran has recently crossed a limit imposed by the pact on its stockpile of low enriched uranium. Tehran also announced that it would carry out on Sunday its threat to enrich uranium to a prohibited degree.
The US diplomatic mission in Vienna said it had solicited the meeting of representatives of the 35 member states of the board of governors to "discuss the latest report from the IAEA Director General". He noted earlier this week that Iran had exceeded the limit of 300 kilograms of low-enriched uranium.
The findings of the IAEA are "worrying", according to the United States, adding that "the international community must hold the Iranian regime to account."
The IAEA is responsible for verifying that Tehran is fulfilling its commitments under the agreement signed in July 2015 with the international community to ensure the peaceful nature of the country's nuclear activities.
