A group of men hit and shaved the heads of an Indian mother and daughter for resisting a gang rape , police have confirmed on Friday. An attack that makes visible, once again, the risks of being a woman in the Asian country.
Seven men, including a local governor, stormed the women's home Wednesday in the northeastern state of Bihar, with the intention of raping the teenage daughter, police officer Sanjay Kumar said. "When the mother and daughter resisted, the men got angry and called a local barber , who shaved their heads," Kumar told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a telephone conversation.
The police report that the men also assaulted the two women with sticks and humiliated them , making them parade through the town before the neighbors began to protest against the treatment they were receiving. "We have arrested two men and we are looking for the other five," Kumar said, adding that the criminal investigation is ongoing.
India has a record of sexual violence against women , despite legal reforms made after the gang rape of a Delhi student on a bus in December 2012, which caused global outrage. The country registered about 40,000 violations in 2016 , an average of around 100 cases per day, according to the latest data from the Government.
The incident in Bihar is not isolated. Earlier this week, a man in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh ran over and killed two women with his car after they protested his attempt to abuse one of his daughters.
Also in Bihar, four men attacked a girl with acid in April after the girl tried to fight against her group rape attempt.
In 2014, the elders of the villages of Bihar shaved the head of an orphan girl, blackened her face with ash and walked her around her neighborhood as punishment for talking to her boyfriend in a public place.
