Russia tries
to intervene in the European election campaign
According to findings of
European Intelligence Services. Efforts to support Russia-friendly or
EU-critical parties via social networks or media such as the multilingual news
channel RT are reported in recent management reports.
Especially young people are in the focus of
influencing attempts. Also the meaning of the European parliament and thus
also a vote is questioned. The European Parliament will be re-elected
between 23 and 26 May.
At the same time, according
to senior intelligence officials, it is stressed that Russian action is less
visible than before the US presidential election in 2016 or the election in
France in May 2017.
At that time in the US among other things
hacked mails of the Democrats had been published to harm their presidential
candidate Hillary Clinton . In France, the right-wing populist and
pro-Russian candidate Marine Le Pen was even supported by Russian money.
The Moscow government dismissed the allegations on demand
as groundless. Russia does not interfere with the European elections and
does not intend to do so in other elections, the foreign ministry told the
German press agency.
