At least 72 people were taken this Friday alive from the rubble of a building thatcollapsed Wednesday in Bangladesh. At last count, the collapse has caused the death of 304 people , an official said. In total, 2,044 people have been rescuedfrom the wreckage of the building collapsed near the capital Dhaka, which housed several textile mills, shops, a bank and a market, said an Army spokesmanShahinur Islam , as reported in the local newspaper The Daily Star. The number of dead and injured could continue to increase , as some 4,000 workers may have been in the building at the time of its collapse, told Reuters a source from the National Federation of Textile sector of Bangladesh. According to a list prepared by the local police based on allegations made by the families of missing in the disaster and whose bodies have not yet been located , could have still 595 people under the rubble, the agency BSS . The rescue work will continue through Saturday morning , police said according to local news portal bdnews24.com. Industrial Police accused the factory owners to ignore the cracks that appeared in the building on Tuesday, a day before the disaster. Thousands of textile workers were mobilized Friday through the streets of Dhaka and other nearby locations to demand the arrest of the owners of the property and the five workshops that were located inside. During the protests there were several incidents of violence, with clashes between demonstrators and police, while some enraged workers burned down six factories and destroyed a hundred cars. The disaster has again exposed the poor working conditions and safety of workers suffering textile workshops in China , catering to Western multinationals. Bangladesh is the country with the lowest production costs in the apparel industry and, therefore, companies around the world are shifting some of their production there , according to the Clean Clothes Campaign. According to the National Federation of Textile sector of Bangladesh, in the last 15 years there have been about 600 deaths and 3,000 injured in accidents occurring in textile factories (fires or landslides) in the country. In 2005, in one of these catastrophes, sector 61 employees were killed and another 86 were wounded when collapsing a building of nine floors that housed factories in the same town in which on Wednesday saw the new claim.
