Ram Singh is the leader of the group that on December 16 raped and tortured for 40 minutes on a bus in New Delhi to a physiotherapy student who died 23 days later because of the serious injuries. The case caused an uproar throughout the country , where there were daily demonstrations calling for better security for women and the death penalty for defendants who are being tried in a fast track court. The defendants for the violation , who pleaded not guilty, is also the leader of the group, his brother Mukesh, the fruit vendor Pawan Gupta, the gym instructor Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur, cleaner vehicle. These five people are under arrest since December in Tihar Jail, whilesixth allegedly involved in the attack is being tried in a juvenile court , to be 17 years of age.
