"Blue Moon" at funeral services for Neil Armstrong

The funeral of astronaut Neil Armstrong was marked "his" moon: On the day of the funeral was a so-called "blue moon" instead. In English usage, this is the name for a second full moon in a month. With a silent funeral family and friends on Friday (local time) have taken leave of astronaut Neil Armstrong. The first man on the moon, died a week ago at the age of 82. The ceremony in a suburb of Cincinnati in Armstrong's home state of Ohio was not public, a number of prominent companions were there. NASA said it plans in the next two weeks a memorial service for Armstrong in Washington. And the moon came up with a rare spectacle.

"Blue Moon" for Armstrong

On the evening of the funeral he made it in time for the "blue moon". In English usage, this is the name for a second full moon in a month. "Today we have taken from an American pioneer farewell, a researcher, patriot and a man who has 'a small step' made a dream come true humanity," it said at NASA. To his remarkable achievements you'll always remember. "If we take the next steps of exploration of humanity, we are standing on the shoulders of this brave man."

Formation of fighter jets

Several fighters attack a squadron formed in the sky a formation to Armstrong's honor, which is normally flown at commemorations for fallen pilots. The capacity for aircraft remains empty normally. Among those that the world-famous astronauts paid their respects, was Armstrong's colleague John Glenn. Glenn had orbited the earth in 1962 as the first American in space. He is 91 years old. To Armstrong's funeral there had been a dispute because a politician of his home state had called for a state funeral. But this is actually the President reserved. U.S. President Barack Obama had instead arranged nationwide all flags should fly at half-mast.
