Letter reveals that Hitler gave temporary protection to Jewish veteran of World War I

A letter of August 1940 shows that Adolf Hitler gave protection to Ernst Hess, a Jewish officer who fought at his side in WWI. The protection, however, lasting only a few months. In June 1941, Hess was a concentration camp near Munich. The discovery of the document was made by historian Susanne Mauss. The document, which bears the seal of the head of the SS, Heinrich Himmler, mentions the "desire" to protect Hitler's former companion in arms of his own policy of hatred, which resulted in the deaths of 6 million Jews. Although explicitly recognize Hess as "Jew with four Jewish grandparents," the letter emphasizes the will of Hitler that is considered "favorably" the demand for Hess to enjoy special treatment. The paper concludes with an invitation to the competent authorities to "leave alone" the person concerned. The journal Jewish Voice from Germany  published a copy of the document found by Mauss, a member of the editorial board of this publication. The document indicates that Ernst Hess, then judge of the court of Dusseldorf, "was during the war of 1914-1918 in the same company, and Hitler was temporarily head of that company." "The document refers to 'desire' of the dictator and that is something really amazing," says Mauss. She said, quoting Hitler in this type of document was an exceptional event. Mauss found the letter when he was preparing an exhibition called "Lawyers Without Rights" on the history of Jewish lawyers in Düsseldorf. According to the historian, the protection of the dictator lasted from August 19, 1940, the date the document until the first months of 1941. In June 1941, Hess was taken to the authorities of Munich, who presented the letter of protection. The officers then told him that the document had no validity and that he was now a "Jewish and all Jews." Hess was deported to the camp Milbertshofen near Munich. Hess Holocauso survived, unlike his sister Berta, and died on September 14, 1983.
