Android is in three out of four smartphones

Three out of four smartphones sold in the third quarter had the mobile operating system Android from Google Inc. , at a time when the gap between between the firm based phones and Apple Inc widens further, according to a new report.  Shipments of Android-based smartphones manufactured by Samsung, HTC and other vendors almost doubled in the third quarter to 136 million units , according to research firm IDC industry. Strong sales increased participation of Android in the global market for smart phonesto 75 percent from 57.5 percent in the same period last year. The market share of Apple rose to 14.9 percent in the third quarter from 13.8 percent a year earlier. The Apple iPhone uses the software company's mobile iOS. While the advance of Android surpassed Apple's iOS, their gains were mainly at the expense of rival operating systems BlackBerry and Symbian, whose phone shipments decreased significantly with those systems. IDC analyst Kevin Restivo nearby summoned the "links" of Android to the wide range of Google's online services, including online searches and maps, as an important asset that has helped the growth of Android. "Google has a thriving, multifaceted product portfolio. Many of its competitors, with weaker links to the mobile OS, not have it," Restivo said the IDS report, which was released Thursday. Google offers its Android operating system free to handset manufacturers , and mostly gets advertising money online when consumers access their services on devices. The operating system BlackBerry from Research in Motion had a share of 7.7 percent in the third quarter from 9.5 percent a year earlier. Symbian, which had a share of 14.6 percent a year ago, fell to 4.1 percent in the third quarter. Nokia still offers Symbian software in some of its phones, but the company has changed the software mostly Microsoft Corp. The software versions of Microsoft accounted for 3.6 percent of the smart phone market in the third quarter. But IDC said the recent launch of the new operating system from Microsoft Phone 8 could improve its position in a rapidly growing market.
