At least 30 killed in an attack on a police station in northern Iraq

At least 30 people have died and 70 others were injured Sunday morning in a car bomb attack followed by armed men assault against police headquarters in Kirkuk, in northern Iraq, as indicated a general police. First, the attackers tried unsuccessfully to take the complex, explained Natah General Mohamed Sabr, head of emergency services in Kirkuk, told AFP. According to police sources cited by Reuters, the car was driven by a suicide driver. The attackers were dressed in police uniforms. This new attack breaks the relative calm that prevailed in recent days in Iraq mired in a political crisis pitting the Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a protest movement of the Sunni minority. The attack on the police headquarters in Kirkuk has not been claimed by Sunni insurgents, who regularly attack security forces in hopes of destabilizing the government.
