Saudi troops kill 1 in Shiite town

A Saudi official said that security forces have killed one person in clashes in an eastern province that has witnessed tense demonstrations by Shiites demanding reforms. Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki said Friday that a security patrol moving through a town in the oil-rich Qatif province the night before was hit by a firebomb, and when the troops exited the vehicle they came under gunfire. He says the troops returned fire injuring two, one of whom died later in hospital. The Saudi Shiite news site Rasid says 22-year old Issam Mohammed was hit by several gunshots in his body after a security vehicle was pelted with rocks in the town of al-Awamiya. The site says three protesters were injured.
