Typhoon "Bopha" has caused 238 deaths in the Philippines due to floods, storms and landslides in central and southern regions , as reported by the Army. The floods caused the death of 143 people only in Compostela Valley in Mindanao , the southern island that was hit by the storm on Tuesday, said Lt. Col. Lyndon PanizaA total of 70 of these casualties occurred in the town of New Bataan, where there are also 200 missing . Other 81 people were killed and 21 are missing in the neighboring province of Davao Oriental, Paniza added. The typhoon, the strongest to hit the country this year , came ashore in the town of Baganga, on the east coast of the island of Mindanao, before 05:00 pm on Tuesday (21:00 GMT Monday). After the tropical storm that last year claimed the lives of 1,200 peoplein Mindanao, authorities on this occasion took preventive measures .Such were suspended classes in schools and more than a hundred flights were canceled. The Philippines is hit by about 20 typhoons year , some of them highly destructive. The "Bopha" is number 16 this year.
