The super storm Sandy on Monday touched the coast of New Jersey with winds of about 130 mph and dragged a record wave of more than four meters of sea water to the city of New York , threatening the subway and electrical systems Wall Street. At least 10 people have died in the United States and one in Canada because of a storm that suspended presidential campaign a week before the elections.Sandy had left 69 people dead in the Caribbean before moving across the Atlantic. In an attempt to reduce the damage from the storm, the main electricity company in the city of New York cut service to 6,500 customers in the area south of Manhattan, home to Wall Street. But an even larger portion of the city was hit by blackouts caused by floods and explosions of transformers. A witness said the agency Reuters that a substaciĆ³n have 19 workers trapped.  In total, Sandy knocked out power to at least 3.1 million people along the northeastern coast of the country. Just before the vortex reached land, the storm lost its hurricane status , but the distinction is purely technical, and winds still has the power of a meteor. As he approached, Sandy hit the northeast corridor cities - Washington , Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, with rains and gusts of over 137 kilometers per hour. It is also combined with a cold weather system coming from the west that became one dangerous superstorm , a monstrous hybrid that is not only rain and high winds, but snow. Sandy hit land at 8 pm to about 8 miles from Atlantic City , where the famous promenade swept the city off the coast . The ocean rose nearly 4 meters at the southern tip of Manhattan, authorities said.

Airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights , which has altered the plans of travelers worldwide, and the cost of the damage it can cause the storm is estimated between 10,000 million and 20,000 million dollars, which means it could be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. historyPresident Barack Obama and Republican contender Mitt Romney canceled his campaign appearances in the last stretch of the race, when only one week remaining before the Nov. 6 election.

"When you are asked to evacuate, they need to evacuate, "said the president. "Do not procrastinate, do not stop, do not question the instructions given to them, because this is a powerful storm." The major financial markets of the United States, including the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the CME Group in Chicago, announced an unusual shutdown on Monday .There were no jobs in the UN headquarters.
