Shiite Muslims in Pakistan, the other martyrs

"Two brothers Shiites have been killed in Karachi yesterday ... one of them was getting married today ... what's going on in this world? "asks the Pakistani from Lahore Moeid Haider, who belongs to that branch of Islam. In Pakistan called Syed Raza, Shabbir Askai or multiplies the chances of being killed ... have features different from those of most, too. Shiite Muslims are 20% or 30% of the population, which means about 60 million people. The killings of members of this branch of Islam at the hands of Sunni extremist groups have grown "dramatically". According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), more than 350 have been executed so far this year. One hundred of them in Baluchistan province, where the population is usually Hazara. That figure does not include the two young men, or to about 40 who died Sunday in several attacks, one of them with a bomb that blew up two buses in the district of Mastung (Balochistan) the Southwest.

The 'objective'

However, although the most popular targets are Hazaras, the director of the organization in Pakistan, Ali Dayan Hasan , underlines that there ELMUNDO.es Shia Muslims across Pakistan and in all ethnic groups. "The State has chosen the Wahhabi version of Islam [the same imposed by clerics of Saudi Arabia] to support his speech and uses hyper jihadism as a tool," said Mohammad Taqi , Pakistani columnist 'Daily Times'. "By default, the Shiites are now considered strange. Policy comes first, but in the end it seems that the jihadi tail is wagging the dog. Moreover, in the attempt to create a national identity, diversity has been set aside and People are fanatical, "he adds. Among the highlights bloodiest attacks of the past August when four buses circulating in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were ambushed by gunmen who drove down to travelers and, after verifying their identity, summarily executed 22 of them identified as Shiites. In the cruel scene videos posted on the Internet can be heard shouting "Allah akbar" (God is great) and on. A spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, Tehrik-e-Taliban , claimed responsibility for the killings. But they are not alone, other groups such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ, Soldiers Jhangvi, by founder) also have the Shiites as prey, and they have claimed responsibility for attacks in Afghanistan even. Also, Lashkar-e-Taiba (Soldiers of the Pure, which fight against Indian rule in the disputed Kashmir), is accused of several deadly attacks in India, including the Mumbai attacks of 2008 and a raid on its parliament in December 2001 along with the cashmere Jaishi-e-Muhammad (Army of Muhammad) that was about to trigger a war between the neighbors.

The senselessness of hate

These radical Sunnis accuse Shias to be infidels ('Kafir') if not true Muslims. They claim that their behavior, from believing in the infallibility of their Imams or give excessive weight to others that the Prophet Muhammad (Muhammad) and Ali (his son), Fatima (Prophet's daughter and wife of Ali) and Hussein (son of both) or diverts them from the highest principle of Islam : the oneness of God. The origin of the split between respective branches of Islam goes back to the problems of succession after the death of Muhammad , the Shias the only valid claims that they are the descendants of Muhammad.Today, the hatred of the radicals is transformed, as then, in murders " Sunni militant groups have been fed by the army as part of Pakistan's security policy. latter, originally used by the military and the secret services as assets in Afghanistan and Kashmir, Shias accuse of not being Muslims. After the 11-S, since the State has made half-hearted attempts to stop them, have turned against the Pakistani Shia population with greater ferocity , "says Dayan Hasan. " We are in a state of siege, we can not move anywhere .'re being killed and no one to do anything, "laments the Hazara Democratic Party chairman, Khaliq Hazara , told the Pakistani daily The Express Tribune.Syed Sadiq Raza Taqvi , cleric in Karachi, warns: "We try to control our young people not to take revenge." In Quetta and Karachi, Shiite leaders urge them to exercise restraint and only buy weapons for their own defense.

Reviews for the ineffectiveness of Justice

Experts point out the influence of Saudi Arabia : "The Sunni extremist groups have long been supported by elements in Saudi Arabia, including the government itself," says HRW regional director. In this sense, Taqi remember the Saudis were the ideological and financial engine of jihad in Pakistan since its inception and, as far asIran , ruled by Shiites, denies it is supporting its minority in Pakistan, "for the simple and important reason that never a Shiite could rule here ... "he says. According to HRW, though authorities say they have arrested dozens of suspects since 2008, only a handful have been charged , and no one has been charged. " Pakistan goes through a difficult transition to democracy . was facing a security crisis and reeling under attacks by Al Qaeda, the Taliban and its affiliates. Shiites are occupying important positions in the government, but they and the same Executive has a limited ability to suppress militant groups or elements that support the military and intelligence agencies, "Dayan Hasan regrets. For its part, Pakistan insists: "We are a democratic and progressive working to protect human rights", in the words of Hina Rabbani Khar , before the Human Rights Council of the UN, collected by Reuters. From International Crisis Group stressed that the choice that Pakistan faces is not between the military and the mullahs, but between "true democracy and the alliance between the military and the mullahs, who is responsible for creating and sustaining religious extremism "said Samina Ahmed , director of the NGO in Islamabad.

China l much harder to control Internet

China  passed a law by which citizens are required to register with their real names to access the Internet and other telecommunications services, a move some sectors interpreted as an attempt to muzzle the already  censored Chinese network"Vendors will ask users to provide real-identifiable information when signing agreements to grant access to internet, landlines or mobile devices to allow users to publish information in the public domain, "says the resolution, which consists of 12 articles. As noted several official media during the week, in practice, the new rules will force the Chinese to present their ID when they sign such contracts. Although authorities justify the action aims to "ensure information security and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of citizens", some users are behind a will to control the opinions , some critically and hitherto anonymous, Internet users. Under the new regulatory framework, in addition, the providers of these services " are required to immediately stop any illegal information once detected and take appropriate action , "including registration and subsequent disposal, adding that they can do" before inform the supervisory authorities ", which can also access the data. The document, approved by the National People's Assembly (ANP) after five days of meetings, does not specify what is considered "illegal information"A similar measure was tried in March to microblogs, social networks most successful in China, but has not actually been implemented and several users continue to write under pseudonyms. Besides citizens, the new law could affect far more businesses like Internet cafes , popular in China, if the new policies will take a more comprehensive control of their customers. Some of the dissident Chinese government could also accuse the new regulatory framework, as it is expected to be more difficult to use the net anonymouslyAnother point of law, however, says that the authorities " ensure the protection of information that can be used to determine the identity of a user "and explicitly prohibits these services providers" sell or provide such illegal "this information to others. "Violators can face penalties such as confiscation of illegal gains, revocation of licenses and the closure of websites , "says the document. While the authorities note that this procedure "is necessary to prevent false accusations" and already exists in several countries, many users consider this step as an attack on freedom of expression in a time when, for example, several cases of corruption have been unveiled by leaks journalists and citizens to Chinese forums and social networks. Although not yet know the exact consequences of the adoption of the law or behave in practice, it appears that the Chinese government censor arm-popularly called "The Great Cibermuralla" - is tightening its policies . And you are seeing this, for example, companies offering VPN (virtual private network, for its acronym in English), used by dissidents or foreign journalists to enter blocked websites in China, some services in recent weeks have left to function normally. Internet users in China have to deal with an extensive system of censorship, especially in politically sensitive issues such as human rights, while sites such as FacebookTwitter and Youtube are inaccessible without VPN .

PAKISTAN | United Nations decides to reduce the campaign Killed three other workers polio campaign in Pakistan

Three new murders have risen today to nine the number of workers in the vaccination campaign against polio killed in Pakistan in the past 48 hours in what is suspected to be a wave of crimes coordinated by the Taliban insurgencyOn the death of a vaccinator on Monday and five women, one of them 14-year- joins the murder this morning of another member of the medical team who was shot dead in Peshawar, capital of the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KPK) and a vaccinator and his driver in the Charsadda district, reports the BBC, adding that the UN has decided to reduce its campaign in the country. All attacks have been perpetrated by masked gunmen firing from motorcycles and then abscondAlthough the wave of deaths yesterday led the federal government to order the suspension of the campaign, the regional government of KPK disregarded the instruction and decided to continue today with three days of vaccination despite security threats. "We have continued because the most important is to end polio,"said an official of the regional Ministry of Health, Ali Shah, while a police official in Peshawar said that "it is giving protection to vaccination teams."

Suspicions

Although there has been no formal claim the wave of attacks, suspicion falls on the Taliban (Pakistan grouped under the acronym TTP) as it related groups in the tribal areas in summer threatened to attack the vaccinators. What at first was a boycott of local tribal groups to demand economic improvements to the local administration quickly became a campaign against vaccination arguments made fortunes locals. One of the first justifications that gave the Taliban threats to vaccinators is that they were spies for the U.S. , as it was a Pakistani doctor who participated in the work location of Osama bin Laden last year. Dr. Shakil Afridi, sentenced to 33 years in prison, helped set up a fake child vaccination campaign against hepatitis in the area where bin Laden was believed to obtain DNA samples from the blood of immunized. The hepatitis vaccine is injected while the polio is administered in drop form. A more recent argument is that the Taliban's campaign against polio vaccination is part of a Western plot to sterilize Muslims. Despite all the propaganda that had led to direct threats and even murder last July of an individual vaccination teams in Karachi, until this week there had been a coordinated wave of attacks.

Latest attacks

The attacks in the past 48 hours have occurred in the province of KPK, Pashtun majority, and in the southern city of Karachi, with a large presence of people of this ethnic and growing focus of activity of TTP. Polio is a contagious viral disease that can affect the central nervous system and cause paralysis, this is a disease that has no cure but its prevention by an oral vaccine is easy. Pakistan is the only country with Afghanistan and Nigeria where polio is still endemic and local authorities together with international agencies made a major effort to immunize all children under five in the country. According to the agency, which coordinates the fight against this disease, each year there are four national campaigns for several days in receiving the vaccine about 34 million children. Official figures show that last year there were 198 cases in Pakistan, while in 2012 already accounted 56.
